Presswood Pallets are pest-free and require no specific treatment for export!

The pallets are manufactured in the same manner as particle boards.
Wood chips are dried and the pallets are then molded by applying great
pressure and heat. No plant pests could survive this process, which is
advantageous indeed for the exporter.

Import regulations for (solid) wood pallets
In order to protect their own forests from foreign pests associated
with wood materials, increasing numbers of countries require that wood
be heat-treated and fumigated, and also require a standardized marking
of the pallets and / or certification by the plant protection
authorities.

IPPC-ISPM15 Guidelines
The IPPC (International Plant Protection Committee) is a
sub-organization of the UN's FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture
Organization). Import regulations require that wooden packaging
undergo various processes, such as heat treatment, fumigation,
certification, marking, etc. The aim of this international standard is
to harmonize the different national regulations. Some countries are
already implementing the IPPC-ISPM guidelines as national legislation
(China, Canada); other countries will soon follow suit (South Korea,
EU).

In accordance with the International Standard for Phytosanitary
Measures (IPPC-ISPMs), particle boards present no danger whatsoever of
raw wood pests. Presswood pallets, therefore, are exempt from the
IPPC-ISPM15 regulations for non-manufactured wood, thus offering the
assurance of a rapid and inexpensive import process. You will save
time, aggravation and money!

By using Presswood pallets, you will need neither a phytosanitary
certificate nor a manufacturer's certificate. Some countries, however,
will require the exporter to add a "non-wood declaration" to the
export documents, the text of which can be downloaded in word document
format under Download.
Voluntary manufacturing certificates for countries such as the USA,
Canada, Mexico and Chile are also available there. Documents for other
countries can be obtained upon request.

Presswood certification for your exports to Australia, New Zealand
For these countries, you will need an original "Details of
Manufacture" certificate for each new consignment on Presswood
pallets. Please ensure you request the certificate in a timely fashion
at info@Presswood-paletten.de. Don't forget to add the exporters'
details (company and address)!

Claims:

We claim:

1. A composite pallet for forming one end of a cast concrete pipe, the pallet comprising a concrete base having an annular portion shaped to form the end of the pipe, an outer annular ring bonded to the base around the outer periphery of the annular portion, and an inner annular ring bonded to the base around the inner periphery of the annular portion, the two rings each being spaced from each other and of a material more chip-resistant than the concrete base, the outer ring being shaped to receive one end of an outer cylindrical form, the inner ring being shaped to receive one end of an inner cylindrical form.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the concrete base is annular.

3. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the rings are made of steel.

4. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which an annular boss is formed on the inner periphery of the outer ring to receive the end of the outer form, and an annular boss is formed on the outer periphery of the inner ring to receive the end of the inner form.

5. Apparatus according to claim 4 which includes an outwardly opening annular groove around the annular boss on the outer ring, a gasket disposed in the groove in the outer ring to seal against the end of the outer form, an inwardly opening annular groove around the annular boss on the inner ring, and a gasket disposed within the groove around the annular boss on the inner ring to seal against the end of the inner form.

Description:

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

This invention relates to apparatus for making concrete pipe.

2. Description of the Prior Art

It has long been industrial practice to make concrete pipe by casting a concrete mixture or slurry in a mold cavity of suitable shape. U.S. Pat. No. 1,591,060 shows apparatus for making such pipe. Typically, a pair of cylindrical forms are mounted coaxially on a horizontal steel base, and the pipe is cast in the annular space beteen the two cylindrical forms.

A steel base is expensive because of the high cost of steel and the high cost of working it. In relatively large plants for making concrete pipe, the steel bases alone require a substantial capital investment. This invention provides a base which is relatively inexpensive compared to the prior art steel bases, and yet performs as well as the steel bases.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

This invention provides a composite base or pallet for forming the lower end of a concrete pipe cast in an upright position. The pallet includes a concrete base having an annular portion shaped to form the lower end of the pipe. An outer annular ring is bonded to the base around the outer periphery of the annular portion of the base. An inner annular ring is bonded to the base around the inner periphery of the annular portion of the base. The two rings are each of a material which is more chip-resistant than the concrete base. Preferably, the rings are made of steel. The outer ring is shaped to receive one end of an upright outer cylindrical form, and the inner ring is shaped to receive one end of an upright inner cylindrical form, which fits coaxially within the outer form.

Preferably, the concrete base is annular, and the rings are embedded with lugs in the concrete.

In the preferred form, an annular boss is formed on the inner periphery of the outer ring to provide an outwardly extending annular shoulder or seat for the lower end of the outer form. An annular boss is formed on the outer periphery of the inner ring to provide an inwardly extending annular seat for the lower end of the inner cylindrical form.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

FIG. 1 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view showing typical bell and spigot ends of concrete pipes;

FIG. 2 is a plan view of the composite pallet of this invention with the outer and inner cylindrical forms removed; and

FIG. 3 is a view taken on line 3--3 of FIG. 2 with the outer and inner cylindrical forms in place for casting.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

Referring to FIG. 1, a first section of pipe 10 includes the typical spigot end 12 adapted to mate with a typical bell end 14 of a second section of concrete pipe 16.

Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, an annular concrete base 18 rests on a floor (not shown) or other suitable support. A raised annular boss 20 is formed integrally with the concrete base on its upper surface. A downwardly and inwardly sloping frusto-conical wall 22 joins the inner periphery of the concrete boss with the outer periphery of a lower flat central section 24, which forms the remainder of the top surface of the annular concrete base. A horizontal annular outer steel ring 26 is embedded in the upper edge of the outer periphery of the raised annular boss of the concrete base. The outer ring includes an upwardly extending annular boss 28 formed integrally with the remainder of the ring so that the ring has an annular outwardly extending shoulder or seat 30 and a vertical cylindrical wall 32. An annular gasket 34 is disposed within an outwardly opening horizontal annular groove 36 in the cylindrical wall 32 of the raised boss on the outer steel ring.

The lower end of a conventional hollow cylindrical form 38 makes a close fit against the vertical cylindrical wall 32. The gasket 36 seals the annular space between the inner face of the outer form and the upright cylindrical wall 32. The lower end of the outer form is stiffened by a relatively short heavy cylindrical outer shoe 40 welded to the outside surface of the outer form.

The outer ring is firmly anchored in the raised concrete boss by a plurality of inwardly and radially extending embedment lugs 42 welded at equally spaced intervals to the inside face of the outer ring, and by a plurality of inwardly and downwardly extending short sections 43 of reinforcing bar welded at their respective upper ends to the lower end of the junction between the lugs and the inner annular steel ring. Each lug is a vertical rectangular steel plate having a height equal to that of the outer ring. The upper surface of each lug is flush with the top surface of the raised boss on the outer ring, and both of these surfaces are flush with the top surface of the raised boss 20 on the concrete base.

A horizontal inner annular steel ring 44 is embedded in the inner periphery of the upper inner edge of the concrete base. The inner ring includes an integrally formed annular raised boss 46 on the outer periphery of the outer ring so that an inwardly extending annular seat 48 and a vertical cylindrical wall 49 are formed at the inner periphery of the inner annular ring. The lower end of an inner cylindrical form 50 rests on the inwardly extending seat 48. The outer surface of the inner form makes a close fit against the vertical cylindrical wall 49. An annular gasket 52 in an annular inwardly opening horizontal groove 54 in the vertical cylindrical wall 49 seals the annular space between the lower end of the inner form and the cylindrical wall 49. The lower end of the inner form is stiffened by a relatively short heavy cylindrical inner shoe 55 welded to the inside of the inner form.

The inner ring is firmly anchored in the concrete base by a plurality of radially and outwardly extending embedment lugs 56 welded at their respective inner ends to the outer face of the inner ring at equally spaced intervals, and a plurality of downwardly and outwardly extending short sections 57 of reinforcing bar welded at their respective upper ends to the lower end of the junction between the lugs and the outer annular steel ring. Each embedment lug is a vertical rectangular plate having a height equal to that of the total height of the inner ring so that the top surface of the raised boss on the inner ring, the top surface of each respective lug, and the horizontal surface 24 of the inner portion of the cylindrical base lie in the same horizontal plane. Thus, the upper surfaces of the rings, the lugs, and the concrete base are disposed to shape the spigot end of a concrete pipe (not shown in FIGS. 2 and 3) cast in the annular space 60 between the inner and outer forms.

In using the composite pallet of this invention, the top surface of the concrete base is coated with a suitable silicone base sealer which fills the surface pores of the concrete and reduces sticking of the cast concrete pipe to the concrete base. A wax coating is preferably applied on top of the silicone sealer between each casting operation to minimize sticking. The pallet and forms are assembled as shown in FIG. 3. Concrete mixture or slurry (not shown) is poured into the annular space between the inner and outer forms with suitable tamping and vibration. The upper end of the concrete pipe is shaped with a conventional top ring (not shown) to form the spigot end of the pipe. Of course, the pallet could be shaped so that it forms the spigot end of the pipe. This would be achieved by making a pallet which is the mirror image of the pallet shown in FIG. 3.

After the concrete mixture or slurry is sufficiently set for the pipe to be self-supporting, the cylindrical forms are removed, and are ready for reuse. After the pipe is more fully cured, it is removed from the pallet, which is then ready for cleaning and the application of a fresh coat of wax or oil before the next pipe is cast.

The advantages of this invention, particularly for large diameter pipes, say, three feet to twelve feet, is that the composite pallet results in significant material cost savings and substantially cuts fabricating costs. The bulk of the pallet is formed of concrete, which is relatively inexpensive, and easily cast in the desired shape. The steel rings on the pallet prevent spalling damage to the concrete base which would otherwise result from the repeated set-up and removal of the steel wall forms. The rings also provide a positive and reliable seal for both the inner and outer pipe wall forms.

obvious for some time, and several companies have attempted to introduce
alternative products in plastic, aluminum and steel. We believe that our steel
and galvanized steel pallet will offer the following advantages over other

65,000 pounds. Alternative materials like plastic and aluminum can
hold about 20,000 pounds per load.

We believe that the wood pallet industry is very fragmented, consisting of over approximately 3,700 small manufacturers. We believe that our only competition in the wood pallet industry is Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pooling which operates in over 30 countries, controlling approximately 150 million pallets and 30 million containers. Further, we are aware of several metal pallet manufacturers that are, or potentially could be, our competition. These metal pallet manufacturers have longer operating histories, greater name recognition and significantly greater financial resources.

PALLET MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS SERVICES

We are engaged in reducing product distribution costs for manufacturers and distributors by providing value-added transport packaging products and logistical services. Our transport packaging services focus on reducing customer distribution costs and include pallet retrieval, repair, reverse distribution, tracking, logistics and value-added information services.

Acquiring wood pallet manufacturers and distributors combined with our pallet management and logistics services are intended to allow us to create credibility, reliability, consistency and performance, and perform ongoing "in house" assessments in order to determine the optimal allocation of both wood and steel pallets. Through these efforts, we hope to create a vertically integrated company that offers a seamless and efficient conduit for renting steel pallets and selling wood pallets.

We intend to further reduce labor and supply chain costs and ensure seamless integration of pallets into the customer's supply chain by: (a) on-site management of all pallets, including the inspection and sorting of pallets; (b) inventory management and ordering of all pallets; and (c) improved asset control and tracking, either through on-site APL personnel or a dedicated IT connection.

Pallet Management and Logistics Services

The Closed Loop System:

In order to facilitate a working leasing system a process is needed to be created that would allow the delivery and recovery of pallets; this is what we call our "closed loop system". This system functions when an order is received, a delivery date is entered and a truck is booked for delivery. The pallets are picked up from either a manufacturing facility or a depot and delivered to the customer. As part of entering into an agreement with us, the customer agrees to hold the used pallets at its facility to be picked up once a full load has been collected, unless there are several customers within a certain radius, then once a full load has been collected among a group of customers, a truck will pick up the used pallets to be returned to a depot (size of radius depends on location of customer, size of city/cities that the customer is located by or in and number of other customers within the radius). Pallets are collected and stored in a predictable manner, which allows us to coordinate the delivery of its pallets to its customers with the pickup of its used pallets.

The Pallets will be manufactured at our manufacturing facilities, and collected by standard recycling practices.

Tracking the Pallets:

The pallets are tracked through several methods including: 1) standard inventory management where a customer is given x number of pallets that are transported to preset destinations. The customer must return or account for x number of pallets by a certain date determined by its normal inventory turn around period agreed upon when a contract is signed; 2) radio frequency identification tags
("RFID"), which track pallets as they enter and leave our facilities; and 3)
satellite tracking chip is used only if an order is large enough to warrant the cost of resources needed to track the pallets. As well as needing an order large enough in size, the price per a pallet is also increased. The satellite tracking system is used much like GPS. A signal is sent to the pallets and then sent to the satellite giving us the ability to locate the pallets within feet of their current location.

The Internet and Customers

We intend to use the Internet to help inform our current customers where their order of pallets is located. If they are standard pallets then the customer can login using a name and password that was given to them to find if their load of pallets has been shipped to them, as well as to determine how many pallets are due back from them. The RFID allows for more information to be entered for the customers to see, such as what product is being shipped on the pallets and which warehouse the pallets are in. The satellite tracking gives the information that the RFID does as well as provide current status of product such as location on the interstate. How often the information is updated is pre set when the pallets are ordered.

The only drawback to manufacturing steel pallets is that a large number has to be produced before we can effectively service several different companies on a leasing basis. The steel pallets are very easy to lease to companies. The steel pallets are stronger than wood and plastic pallets (which mean less product loss due to broken pallets), the steel pallets have conformity, whereas most wood pallets do not, are more sanitary, and the steel pallets are as light as the average wood pallet.

The steel prices have actually fluctuated by a similar percentage as the wood prices. The fluctuating steel price actually has less of an effect over time on our leasing program. Since the average steel pallet has an expected life of 5 years, the steel pallet would pay for itself many times over.

APL STEEL PALLETS

What is Material Handling Equipments(MHE)?
Material Handling Equipments (MHE) are actually equipments that facilitate the handling of materials, which refers to the movement and storage of materials in the facility.

Importance of Material Handling :
Material handling is important as it is the key to warehouse productivity. When materials in the warehouse are being managed well, there will be an increase in efficiency and thus increase productivity. This is where MHE comes to place.

On the other hand, without MHE, it will eventually lead to poor material handling. Some of the poor material handling effects include confusion on product storage, too much walking, cluttered aisles, lack of standardisation, as well as high losses and damages.

Guidelines for Basic Handling

Standardise equipment by using equipment that can be deployed as many areas as possible.
Maximise continuous flow rather than intermittent or one-way flow.
Focus on handling rather than stationary
Minimise ratio of dead-weight to payload of handling equipment and not wasting unnecessary capacity of equipment.
Use gravity flow if possible rather than trigger on electricity.

The first material handling equipment(MHE) we are going to touch on is Conveyors, which facilitates transportation in material handling.

What is conveyors?
By looking at the following video, I'm sure you will know what it is immediately.

Yes, the long black belt where you can see in most sushi restaurant, that carries plates and plates of sushi around the restaurant is an example of conveyor.

History of Conveyor:
Conveyor belts was used since 1901 and was invented by Sandvik and production of Steel Conveyor Belts started. It was being introduced by Henry Ford in 1913 as conveyor belt-based assembly-line in Ford Motor Company's factory production.

What are the characteristic of conveyors?

High throughput
Low power usage but high equipment cost
Manning required
Exclusive usage from other systems
For intermittent or continuous movement

Conveyor safety
When it comes to any electronic or mechanic devices, safety issues should be taken seriously:

Although this rule is common sense, people still disobey this rule and there are injuries and equipment damages every year.

There are technicians who are too confident in their ability without knowing power is connected and causing injuries.

Conveyors controls is more than just an on/off switches. Therefore, these control should never modified unnecessary reason. It is important to monitor the various controls making sure no one misused, modified, or disconnected them.

There are actually many different types of conveyors like belt, overhead, screw, slat, roller, apron, chain, monorail, bucket etc. Now, i will focus on two types of conveyors which are widely used in the industry.

Belt Conveyors:

The video above on the sushi is an example of belt conveyors. Belt conveyors is a continuous moving belt that carries materials or packages from one place to another and consists of two pulleys. It can be used for light, medium and even heavy duty work.

Belt conveyors are the most commonly used bulk handling conveyors in history due to their reliability, versatility, and range of capacities. Materials from fine powders to large, lumpy stones can be handled on a belt conveyor.

Advantages of belt conveyor :

Lower labor cost than alternative means of transportation
Conveying a variety of materials
Wide range of capacities
Adaptability of path including terrain
Steep angle conveying
Flexible loading and discharging of materials
Reduced environmental impact, air and noise pollution
Lower energy costs than alternative means of transportation
Safety, thanks to minimal manual interfaces required
Reliability, that comes with the simplicity of fewer moving parts than other conveyor systems

Disadvantages of Belt Conveyors:

Operate on incline only to about 28°

If the material is sticky, belt cleaning can be difficult and generally not very successful.

Overhead Conveyors:

Overhead conveyors provide continuous movement of materials overhead, as opposed to standard floor conveying systems. Overhead conveyors save space and are common for moving materials around an industrial facility. These conveyors are often used to sort, distribute, and buffer while maximizing space.

Types of Conveyors

The main types of overhead conveyors include automated electrified monorail (AEM) conveyors, enclosed track conveyors, and overhead chain conveyors.

Areas of Application for Overhead conveyors :

Overhead conveyors have many applications in manufacturing and distributing industries, such as in painting (electrostatic, dip and powder coating, spraying, etc.), parts cleaning, industrial ovens, transporting materials between facilities or workstations, and materials storage. Overhead conveyors provide a space-saving and economical solution for conveying needs.

Advantages of Overhead Conveyors :

The advantages of overhead conveyors is that it can help to maximise space as the overhead conveyor becomes a live store, which via vertical bends, can be routed into roof space, which would otherwise be non productive. Similar benefits could be at the production line when space for storage may also be at a premium. Other benefits may be the elimination of internal transport, such as fork truck or manually pushed trolleys.

Transport Equipment (ll) - Cranes

The next handling equipment that facilitates transportation we are going to touch on is Cranes.

What is cranes?

In definition, Crane is a machine for hoisting and moving heavy objects by means of cables attached to a movable boom.

Jib crane, bridge crane, gantry cane, stacker crane are the different types of cranes available in the industry and they all have different uses. It is very important to understand the types of lifting systems available and how they differ from each other when deciding on what types of cranes to use.

Therefore we need to ask questions like:

What am I actually doing with the system? For example, will it be used to move expensive tools into/out of a molding machine or to load/unload steel from trucks?

How can a crane increase the safety of the loads being lifted?

How can a crane improve my workers' safety in handling the loads?

How frequently will it be used each shift?

How will the load need to be moved and located?
How easy is it to move the system to a new location in my factory?

Do I really need three axes of hook movement (e.g., up/down, left/right, and forward/back) or will only two be sufficient?

How heavy are the loads to be lifted?

How much money should I invest in a system?

Crane Safety

Construction crane safety is also a very important issue to take into consideration. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) held a share holder meetings on October 29th through November 5th to gather feedback on the Construction Crane Certification and Operator Qualifications and Experience drafts.

A tough new law passed earlier this year is designed to give some peace of mind to people who live and work near the looming construction tower cranes dotting Western Washington's skylines.

But the specifics -- just how the safety law will be carried out -- are still being written by the state Department of Labor and Industries.

By the end of this month, L&I plans to have completed its first draft of the rule, spokeswoman Elaine Fischer said. The department will gather comments on the draft in a series of meetings statewide from Oct. 29 through Nov. 5.

The construction industry already voiced its concerns and opinions in a round of meetings in July.

"The biggest issue for discussion was probably the number of operator hours that should be required for operator certification on different types of cranes," Fischer said.

To be considered qualified, according to the law, a crane operator must have up to 2,000 hours of experience -- a maximum that has been challenged by many in the industry as unworkable.

Legislators enacted the law in the wake of several alarming crane incidents late last year. After a 210-foot-high crane collapsed in downtown Bellevue, killing a man in his nearby apartment and severely damaging three buildings, structural problems were found in several more cranes operating in the Seattle area.

A six-month L&I investigation found that the collapsed crane's steel base was to blame. Tower cranes, which are used for construction on skyscrapers, are normally installed in concrete. The Seattle engineering firm that designed the foundation, Magnusson Klemencic Associates, was fined $5,600.

Lease Crutcher Lewis, the general contractor at the Tower 333 site, where the crane fell, was fined $9,200. Both firms are named in a lawsuit filed by the family of the deceased.
Under the new law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2010, the state will play a much bigger role in ensuring that tower cranes are being operated properly and are secure in their foundations. Under the old rules -- criticized for being lax -- responsibility for safety fell mostly to construction companies.

In the upcoming meetings, L&I will take suggestions in two areas: how crane inspectors should be certified, and what qualifications should be needed to become a crane operator.

"There's a lot of different kinds of cranes and a lot of people that want to weigh in on that," Fischer said. "We're starting from scratch here in our state developing rules in this industry. We have to involve people in the industry that know how things operate."

Developers will have to contract with a certified crane inspector to certify their cranes. That means that the cranes, its inspectors and its operators must all be certified.

The crane inspector rule will likely operate similar to sister rules regarding amusement ride inspectors and maritime crane inspectors, she said.

The law also requires that an independent professional engineer stamp approval on any "non-standard" tower crane base.

Therefore, we can see that general safety rules is also taken into serious considerations. Some of the rules operators shall comply when operating cranes and even hoist are:

Do not engage in any practice that will divert your attention while operating the crane.
Respond to signals only from the person who is directing the lift, or any appointed signal person. Obey a stop signal at all times, no matter who gives it.
Do not move a load over people. People shall not be placed in jeopardy by being under a suspended load. Also, do not work under a suspended load unless the load is supported by blocks, jacks, or a solid footing that will safely support the entire weight. Have a crane or hoist operator remain at the controls or lock open and tag the main electrical disconnect switch.
Ensure that the rated load capacity of a crane's bridge, individual hoist, or any sling or fitting is not exceeded. Know the weight of the object being lifted or use a dynamometer or load cell to determine the weight.
Check that all controls are in the OFF position before closing the main-line disconnect switch.
If spring-loaded reels are provided to lift pendants clear off the work area, ease the pendant up into the stop to prevent damaging the wire.
Avoid side pulls. These can cause the hoist rope to slip out of the drum groove, damaging the rope or destabilizing the crane.
To prevent shock loading, avoid sudden stops or starts. Shock loading can occur when a suspended load is accelerated or decelerated, and can overload the crane or hoist. When completing an upward or downward motion, ease the load slowly to a stop.

Jib crane, Bridge crane, Gantry crane, Stacker crane are some of the different types of crane available.

Jib Cranes

Jib crane is a crane having an arm guyed at a fixed angle to the head of a rotating mast and it consists of a pivoting head and boom assembly which carries a hoist and trolley unit. The pivoting head is supported either by a floor-mounted mast providing 360 degree boom rotation or by an existing building column which provides 180 degrees of boom rotation.

Advantages of Jib cranes :

The advantage is the strength, stability and flexibility of the device. It is ideal for lifting a product to or from one material handling system to a work station or machine. It should be a repetitive process.

Another advantage is that jib crane is commonly used for workstation and simple loading / unloading operations where it is not necessary to spot a load precisely. Also, Jib cranes most often handle lighter loads at lower duty cycles than their bridge and gantry crane counterparts.

Disadvantages of Jib crane :

The major disadvantage is that it is stationary and cannot be moved easily from one work area to another. It is designed for positioning a work piece or tool, rather than for moving a product along in the work flow like an overhead crane.

It is also unsuitable to use when there is a need for precise locating of heavy loads, a large area of hook coverage, or frequent use for heavy loads. Another disadvantage is that the hook coverage is limited to the boom length (typically a maximum of 20 ft). The hook operates along a boom which rotates about a fixed point.

Bridge Crane

A bridge crane runs on an elevated runway system along the length of a factory and provides three axis of hook motion (X, Y, and Z). The hoist moves the load up and down, the trolley moves the load right and left, and the bridge of the crane moves the load forward and backward. Both single and double girder overhead traveling bridge crane designs allow very precise hook positioning and gentle load placement.

Advantages of bridge crane :

greatest flexibility for hook coverage and control over the load fewest number of physical obstructions on your factory floor
no interference with the work on the floor
reduced aisle space requirements, easy access to most areas within the lifting bay
extension to areas outside the building.

Disadvantages of bridge crane :

Problems encountered like:

Crane travelling too far before stopping.

It is likely that it uses electric motor brakes and that, like most cranes, the brake pads haven't been replaced (they require replacing or adjusting every 3 months).

Bearings wearing out too soon.
Contactor problems.
Broken push button pendant or cable.
Parts availability problems.
Brakes wearing out or not working properly.

Positioning equipment (l) - Hoist

The first positioning equipment we are going to touch on is hoist.

What is hoist?

A hoist is a device used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift-wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium.

Advantages of hoist

It can be placed in tight spaces such as between benches
Flexible

Disadvantage of hoist

There is a need take the weight usage into consideration. For example, package hoist is most suitable for light to moderate usage. When handling with heavy usage, we must use built-up hoist. (It will be covered in later part of this post) There is also a need to minimise ratio of dead-weight to payload of the handling equipment.

It usually consists of a block and tackle—a combination of one or more fixed pulleys, a moving pulley with a hook or other similar means of attaching loads, and a rope (or cable) between them.

Characteristic of hoist

The basic hoist has two important characteristics to define it: Lifting medium and power type.

The lifting medium is either wire rope, wrapped around a drum, or load-chain, raised by a pulley with a special profile to engage the chain. Both the wire rope hoist and chain hoist have been in common use since the 1800s.
The power type can be either electric motor or air motor.

It must be noted that a hoist can be built as one integral-package unit, designed for cost-effective purchasing and moderate use, or it can be built as a built-up custom unit, designed for durability and performance.

Package Hoist:
The term "package" refers to the fact that the hoist is an "integrated package". In other words, the hoist is made up of a series of "proprietary" parts, designed specifically for the purpose of that hoist and all electric chain hoist and most wire rope hoists are "package type" hoists.

Therefore, package hoist is most suitable for light to moderate usage, standard speed and normal lifting lengths. If any service that does not have the norms listed, there would be increase in down time, higher maintenance cost and a drastically reduced service life. The farther out of the norms, the worse the performance. Package hoist is normally being used is in a machine shop or fabricating shop.

Built- up Hoist:

When the needs exceed the norms listed above (package hoist), it would be most suitable to use a built- up hoist. It should be noted that built up hoists can be as low as 3 ton capacity, when special speeds, duty cycles or long lifts are required, but normally heavy usage applications, high production, maintenance intensive applications. Built-up hoist on the other hand is used for heavy to sever service like Steel Mill or NASA due to its durability, performance, and reparability requirements.

Only qualified and licensed individual can operate both cranes and hoists, and there is a list of safety rules and responsibilities whereby all personnel which came in contact with the equipment must obey to maintain a safe workplace for all personnel.

Types of hoist

When deciding which type of hoist should be used, so as to provide extended service and efficiently matches the requirements of the job; we should also ask questions like:

Is a manual or power hoist needed?
Is power hoist which is an electric or pneumatic (compressed air) type the better choice?
What load capacity is required?
How fast and how high must the hoist work?
Is a chain or wire rope required?
What headroom is available for hanging the hoist?

Construction hoist:
Although there are many types of hoist, construction hoist is what most of us haven seen before as it is part of our daily life.

It known as a Man-Lift, or construction elevator, this type of hoist is commonly used on large scale construction projects, such as high-rise buildings or major hospitals.

The purpose being is to carry personnel and materials quickly between the ground and higher floors, or between upper floors.

The construction hoist is made up of either one or two metallic cages which travel vertically along stacked mast tower sections. For controlled travel along the mast sections, most modern construction hoists utilize a motorized rack-and-pinion system mounted onto the mast sections, while some older hoists still utilize a system of counterweights.

Positioning Equipment (ll) - Rotary Index Table

The next positioning equipment is Rotary Index Table.

What is Rotary Index Table?
Rotary Index Table is a precision work positioning device used in metalworking. It enables the operator to drill or cut work at exact intervals around a fixed (usually horizontal or vertical) axis. Some rotary tables allow the use of index plates for indexing operations, and some can also be fitted with dividing plates that enable regular work positioning at divisions for which indexing plates are not available.

Examples of how it can be used:

Machine spanner flats on a bolt

Drill equidistant holes on a circular flange

Cut a round piece with a protruding tang

Cut complex curves (with proper setup)

Rotary tables are made with a solid base, which has provision for clamping onto another table or fixture. The actual table is a precision-machined disc to which the work piece is clamped (T slots are generally provided for this purpose). This disc can rotate freely, for indexing, or under the control of a worm (handwheel), with the worm wheel portion being made part of the actual table.

Rotary indexing tables have either fixed or adjustable indexing angles. During each revolution, the table stops for a specified period of time so that an operation can be performed at each station. The bearings that support rotary indexing tables determine both the load capacity and accuracy.

Criteria in selecting rotary index table:

Selecting rotary indexing tables requires an analysis of specifications and features. Specifications include maximum indexing increment, work table diameter, maximum axial load, and maximum radial load.

Rotary indexing tables are powered by pneumatic and electric motors, hydraulic drives, and manual actuation.

Pneumatic rotary indexing tables are suitable for small and medium loads. They are powered by one of more pneumatic cylinders, each of which represents an index. During the return stroke, a pawl locks the table in place. With some devices, the pawl can be adjusted to change the number of indexes.

Electrically-powered tables are generally faster than pneumatic devices and can handle heavier loads.

Tables that are powered by hydraulic drives use a pressurized fluid that transfers rotational kinetic energy.

Manually-actuated rotary indexing tables often include a hand crank or are loosened, turned, and adjusted by hand.

Rotary Index Table Safety

Like wise, the safety of rotary index table is also as important as any other equipment.

In a rotary index table, the parts are loaded well away from the point of operation.
The operator's hands are kept a safe distance from the riveting area.
The rate of production depends on the time required to load the parts.
Normal cycle time is the time required to load component parts plus approximately 5 second for indexing.
Riveting is done during the loading process.
Preventative maintenance are also established and maintained to reduce downtime for repairs and replacement of parts. It is important to take note that when doing preventive maintenance, make sure that the electrical power and air supply to the machine are OFF! :

Cleaning :
Prior to operation, or on a daily basis, perform the following procedure:
1. Using a clean, dry cloth, wipe the machine to remove accumulated dust or other contamination.
2. Using a solvent or similar cleaning fluid, remove accumulated oil or grease from areas not requiring lubrication.
3. Using an approved–type air hose, blow out any chips or metal particles that may be in the working area.

Inspection :
1. Inspect the entire machine for evidence of loose or broken parts. Repair or replace as necessary.
2. Inspect all moving parts for excessive wear. Replace worn parts if required.
3. Inspect all air lines and connections for excessive leakage. Repair or replace as required.
4. Inspect all electrical wiring for loose connections or cracked or worn insulation. Repair or replace if required.

Lubrication :
The Rotary Index Table is equipped with grease fitting under the machine base. Access to the fitting is gained by removing the top of the plastic guard, then using a grease gun with a hose and fitting.
Lubricate the machine with Mobil HP Lithium 12 grease (or equivalent) every 20,000 rotations. Use the same grease to lubricate the drive screw on any optional moving insertion heads.

Moisture and Scrap Removal :
Periodically check the moisture separators at the air supply inlet area of the machine, and drain if necessary.

Also check the scrap containers. During normal operation of the machine, the scrap from the terminal strip is placed in the container on the side of the machine, and scrap from the housing (wire and nib) is placed in the container located at the back of the machine.

Ways to remove scrap from container: To remove the scrap from the container, carefully unscrew the container; remove the cylindrical screen from the inside of the container, and dispose of the scrap in an appropriate manner. Replace the cylindrical screen in the container and replace the container before resuming production.

Unit Load Formation Equipment (l) - Pallets

A pallet is a low, portable platform constructed of wood, metal, or fiberboard, built to specified dimensions, on which supplies are loaded, transported, or stored in units. Pallets are the most common form of unitizing device.
Some of the primary pallet material choices are wood pallet (most common), steel pallet, paper pallet, metal pallet, plastic pallet.

Pallets may afford two- or four-way entry. The two-way entry pallet is so constructed that the forks of a forklift truck may be inserted from either the front or rear of the pallets. The four-way pallet is so constructed that the forks of a forklift truck may be inserted from any of the four sides.
Various types of pallets are two-way double wing, two-way flush, two-way reversible flush, two-way single wing, four way nonreversible flush, block type, foam padded plywood pallet, single face pallet.

Advantages of using pallets:

Handles more items at a time
Reduces the number of trips
Reduces the handling costs
Reduces the loading and unloading times
Reduces the product damage

Disadvantages of using pallets:
Operators can't use either option in areas with rocks or other firm high spots. You may need a forklift to install and remove pallets.

Different types of pallet material will have its own pros and cons.

Unit Load Formation Equipment (ll) - Inter-modal Container

Since the 1960s major efforts have been made to integrate separate transport systems through intermodalism, which took place are several stages. This involves the use of at least two different modes in a trip from origin to destination through an inter-modal transport chain. Inter-modal transportation is the movements of passengers or freight from one mode of transport to another, commonly taking place at a terminal specifically designed for such a purpose.

The container is a large standard size metal box into which cargo is packed for shipment aboard specially configured oceangoing vessels and designed to be moved with common handling equipment enabling high-speed inter-modal transfers in economically large units between ships, railcars, truck chassis, and barges using a minimum of labor. The container, therefore, serves as the load unit rather than the cargo contained therein, making it the foremost expression of inter-modal transportation.

Advantages:

Flexibility of usage. It can transport a wide variety of goods ranging from raw materials (coal, wheat), manufactured goods, and cars to frozen products.
Costs. Relatively to bulk, container transportation reduces transport costs considerably, about 20 times less than bulk transport.
More items can be handled at the same time, thereby reducing the number of trips required and, potentially, reducing handling costs, loading and unloading times, and product damage.
Enables the use of standardized material handling equipment.

Disadvantages:

Time spent forming and breaking down the unit load.
Cost of containers/pallets and other load restraining materials used in the unit load.
Empty containers /pallets may need to be returned to their point of origin.

The article below will illustrate real world application of inter-modal transportation:

Containers from around the world can be found at Diamond Express Inc., a trucking company tucked away between First Avenue North and the airport.
"We're the largest inland container depot around the Birmingham area," says veteran trucking executive Tom Brown, owner of Diamond Express.

The company has developed a niche doing what used to be called "piggybacking," delivering truck trailers to and from flatbed railcars. The process is more modern these days, with containers lifted off trailer chassis and loaded, two-high, minus their cumbersome wheels.

Diamond Express, with $8 million in sales revenue last year, transports and stores containers from around the globe. One of its top customers is Maersk-Sealand, the world's largest steamship company. Intermodal freight, mostly containers from the Far East coming through ports in California, includes clothing, lumber, paper and electronics.

But Brown says his company, spread across three lots totaling 15 acres, doesn't rely solely on international export/imports to and from companies in the South, or the rail-dependent intermodal business as a whole.

"With Norfolk Southern closing its Birmingham intermodal ramp, and Burlington Northern (Santa Fe) moving its California freight through Atlanta (instead of Birmingham), we started focusing four or five years ago on van freight in the South," he says. Industries served include paper products, cooking oil containers and fire extinguisher equipment, to name a few. Local clients include Pepsi bottler and snack food vendor Buffalo Rock, Stevens Graphics, Amerex, Cook Publications and Ventura Foods.

Brown says the ratio of intermodal containers to van freight business is 60/40.

"The main advantage of intermodal is transit time and rates," he says. "If you can put a container that's not time-sensitive on rail service that gets to California in four or five days, and for cheaper rates (than trucks), then you stay with it."

Diamond uses 65 leased owner-operator trucks and 25 company-owned trucks. About 20 office personnel are employed in the company's Birmingham headquarters, and at terminals in Atlanta and Chattanooga.

Hauling the phone books
One of the company's biggest jobs is delivering BellSouth phone books in nine Southern states. Last year, Diamond Express was rated the best delivery company by supervisors at 514 drop-off sites, scoring a 3.85 out of 4.0 (similar to a college grading scale) in quality of service, professionalism, courtesy, condition of the books, on-time performance and other criteria.

ISPM15 and IPPC Background Frequent ask questions.

WHAT:

IPPC: The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) is a
multilateral treaty to harmonize regulations governing those imports
that could impact the physical condition of forests and crops.
ISPM 15: This section of the IPPC describes phytosanitary measures to
reduce the risk of introduction and/or spread of quarantine pests
associated with wood packaging material, made of coniferous and nonconiferous
raw wood, in use in international trade. The pests of
particular concern are the pinewood nematode (found in the United
States, Canada, Mexico and Japan where it is not a threat due to the
existence of natural predators) and the Asian Long-Horned Beetle
(which is found in China and several other locations and is a threat to
United States forests)

WHY:

The goal of the IPPC is to protect crops and forests by eliminating the
importation of foreign pests without impeding international commerce.
WHO: The ISPM 15 was originally agreed to by 118 nations including the
United States and most of our major trading partners. There are now 134
participating countries signed onto the treaty. China, who is not part of the
IPPC group, has nevertheless expressed their intention to adopt the
provisions in the ISPM 15.

WHEN:

The ISPM 15 was passed in March 2002. It was suspended in June
after it was discovered that the trademark of the “no bug” symbol was
compromised. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), who has
ultimate oversight of the treaty, secured the trademark on a new symbol
and reinstated the voluntary standard in 2003. Several countries have
begun implementation, but only Brazil, Canada and New Zealand have
completed the process.

HOW:

Compliance with the IPPC for wood packaging materials allows for
two options:
􀂃 Methyl Bromide (MB) Fumigation: The wood packaging material
should be fumigated with methyl bromide. The U.S. Animal and
Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has designated NWPCA as
the manager of this program.
􀂃 Heat Treatment (HT): Wood packaging material should be heated in
a schedule that achieves a minimum core temperature of 56ºC for a
minimum of 30 minutes. APHIS has selected the American Lumber
Standards Committee (ALSC) as the manager of this program.
NOTE: ISPM 15 requirements apply to all species of coniferous (softwood)
and non-coniferous (hardwood) packaging materials. Some current
regulations only apply to coniferous.

Non-Wood Pallets Make Good Showing At Material Handling Trade Show

CHICAGO — This year’s ProMat material handling trade show featured 300,000 square feet of exhibits and 700 suppliers showing off the latest and the greatest product in the materials handling world.

From a pallet perspective, the show typically provides a good read on what is going on in the arena of non-wood pallets as well as some of the big, high profile players in the industry. CHEP, IFCO Systems and iGPS sponsored exhibits at this year’s show. Regional or local wooden pallet companies were not visible, although they seldom are at this type of trade show.

If You Build RFID, Will They Come?

CHEP showed off its new composite block design as well as a forklift attachment it calls the Blue Guardian. The top of the new composite blocks are recessed on the end and side, which allows the use of a thicker stringer board without increasing overall pallet height.

The Blue Guardian is a forklift mast attachment that provides a rubber cushion against the center block to prevent damage from forklift tine impact. It will be offered in some form to CHEP customers, and it seems like a good idea. Raymond Corp., which manufactures forklifts, offers a similar product called the Pallet Dawg.

CHEP also exhibited its Plus ID pallet, which comes equipped with 3-in-1 CHEP tags – an RFID (radio frequency identification) chip, bar code and an identification number. I did not discuss this directly with CHEP personnel. However, according to others who spoke with CHEP representatives, demand for the pallet has been very modest, at least by CHEP standards. The broad range of customers still has not seen fit to pay the added cost for RFID technology.

A representative of a leading materials handling trade journal noted that the hoopla surrounding RFID tapered off in 2006. “A lot of companies are finding the return on investment just isn’t there,” he said.

However, I attended a presentation by another company supplying RFID technology, and they rattled off cases where customers enjoyed a positive return on investment. Bottom line: there are mixed messages coming from the market place about the value of RFID.

The iGPS exhibit was another active display. It featured a video of CEO Bob Moore (former CEO of CHEP) explaining the value of its plastic pallet pooling service.

A backdrop of the iGPS exhibit was a stack of some pretty rough looking wood pallets. Even though it is a blatant misrepresentation of the wooden pallet industry, the pile of scrap wood pallets is one of those images that the plastic pallet industry used to trot out a lot in years past. Until I saw the iGPS exhibit, I had not seen it used in a while.

I have a mind to float out some pictures of broken expendable plastic pallets, but so much for splitting hairs.

The iGPS pallet is very nice looking and weighs 47 pounds. It features an injection molded base and a twin-sheet thermoform top deck that are ‘welded’ together. All the iGPS pool pallets are equipped with RFID technology, with an RFID chip imbedded in each corner.

iGPS has about 12 customers although they cannot identify them because of confidentiality agreements. Pallet production for the next two years already is committed to customers, according to iGPS.

iGPS announced at ProMat that Mattori, an Arizona-based produce company that grows melons and broccoli, would begin testing the pallet pool this winter.

The iGPS management team is stacked with some heavy hitters. Besides Moore, the team includes Rex Lowe, another former CHEP executive, and Ron Reed, formerly a packaging executive at Wal-Mart.

In addition, there were a number of other former CHEP staffers at the show, marketing pallets and related products for other companies.

At the IFCO exhibit, an upbeat sales team was on hand, and a flat screen TV displayed information about the company’s products and services.

Existing Solutions Find New Traction

It seemed like products that have been around a long time are catching a breath of fresh air in a stronger economy.

Non-wood pallets were strongly represented, as they usually are at this type of event. Clyde Witt, executive editor of Material Handling Management, told me the contingent of plastic pallet vendors seemed as large as ever.

While the usual group of leading plastic pallet manufacturers was present, such as Orbis, Rehrig Pacific and Trienda, there was the usual contingent of newer entrants, too. Some Asian companies were represented and offered very good pricing, such as plastic pallets rackable to 2,000 pounds for about $40. There were some well known European producers, too, including Craemer, marketed by Granville Plastics, and Utz. Most plastic pallet companies seemed to be offering a lightweight expendable pallet in the $10 range for truckload quantities.

A company from China exhibited a lightweight steel pallet, which they said was priced “between wood and plastic.”

While I think that lightweight steel might make some inroads, that type of sales line always drives me crazy. When I suggested to the sales rep that this put the price in the “narrow” range between $4 and $120, that pretty much put a lid on our conversation.

There were a number of metal pallet and container suppliers with a surprising number from Asia. I don’t think I’ve ever picked up as many business cards before with non-North American telephone numbers. The markets are getting more global all the time.

Steel container people seemed bullish on their product lines. They say steel has regained some of its shine for durability as resin costs have increased and plastic pallet and container applications have been around enough years to make a realistic comparison.

Corrugated pallets also were represented by at least four manufacturers. They showed a surprising range of pallets beyond the traditional shipping skid. Products included collapsible pallet containers, reusable pallets, insulated pallet containers, end-of-aisle retail displays and over-sized pallets. One manufacturer displayed a 13-long pallet used for shipping vinyl siding and said he sells 10,000 per month. Freight becomes a factor for corrugated pallets, so some manufacturers partner with companies in other parts of the country to assemble the components close to the customer.

Center for Unit Load Design

Other exhibitors familiar to the wooden pallet industry included APA-The Engineered Wood Association and the Center for Unit Load Design at Virginia Tech, which was represented by Ralph Rupert and Bonnie Maccubbin. Ralph, the new director of the center, said they garnered enough good leads on the first day of the four-day show that they could have packed it in happily after day one. It was the second ProMat for the Center, which also exhibits at PackExpo, a major material handling trade show held in November in Chicago. Ralph and Bonnie also seemed very confident that the new consulting business of Mark White, former director of the center, will generate additional work for the center.

Pallets aside, the ProMat show is always guaranteed to provide a few eye-openers. Two of my favorites this time included a portable automatic wrapping machine that can be brought to the load and automatic guided vehicles that stop and go around unexpected objects like people.

Of course, there were plenty of robotics and other automated storage and material handling systems, which will likely eventually find greater application within the pallet industry.

Smart Pallets--RFID Journal Interview

The entire retail supply chain industry is buzzing over radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and its potential to reduce costs. Wal-Mart, the country’s largest retailer, and the U.S. Department of Defense have both announced aggressive plans to use RFID to track case level and unit load shipments. Suddenly, everybody is starting to seriously look at the technology as prices drop and the market prepares for the next big thing.

Pallet and packaging suppliers may get stuck in the middle as shippers look to implement RFID. Tracking technology may forever change the industry and could create opportunity for progressive pallet companies. Mark Roberti, the founder and editor of RFID Journal, shares his insight to the future and how RFID technology may impact the industry. RFID Journal is a major independent news service covering RFID technology.

Enterprise: Why do you think RFID is starting to get pushed now by the big players like Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense?

Roberti: The main reason is that they have been working to bring the price down to a level where you can put tags on cases that are going to be thrown away. Previously, tag costs were $1-2, and they had more functionality and memory. They were excellent for tracking reusable containers where the cost is amortized over the life of the asset. But now they are talking about putting tags on cases of product within the supply chain where they are going to be tossed away. Then you need to get down to a lower price point. And Wal-Mart feels that the technology is getting there and this is the time for them to move ahead.

Enterprise: Had Wal-Mart not pushed RFID, it probably wouldn’t have gone as fast as it seems to be accelerating. Isn’t that right?

Roberti: That’s true. The Auto-ID Center was originally founded by two manufacturers – Proctor & Gamble (P&G) and Gillette and the Uniform Code Council. They were looking at what would be the successor to the barcode. Wal-Mart had been looking at RFID internally for a long time, and it was very excited about the potential it held for improving inventory visibility and reducing labor costs and so on. But it was too expensive. As the Auto-ID Center began to get some traction and convince people that it was working with vendors that could eventually get the price down to about five cents, then Wal-Mart got very excited and threw its weight behind the effort. Things have really picked up dramatically.

Enterprise: What role do you believe the pallet or packaging supplier will play in the big picture of RFID?

Roberti: It’s not entirely clear. Everything in this industry is very immature and things are in flux. But it is clear that pallets and containers will need to be tracked. CHEP for example has been working with a RFID company called Matrics to develop a tag specifically that can be used on the center block of a pallet and can be read with 100% accuracy. CHEP is hoping that it will be able to charge a little bit more for pallet rentals with the tags because it will be providing a little extra value for its customers. CHEP’s customers can use tagged pallets to meet Wal-Mart’s 100% read rate requirement.

There certainly is a role for pallet suppliers, and a lot of people believe that the manufacturers will eventually begin to push the cost of the tag down to the people below them in the supply chain…Right now all the manufacturers are upset because they are going to put a label that could cost 10-20 cents right now on every box they make. Eventually they are going to go to their packaging companies and say, ‘We want this in the package.’ They’re going to go to their pallet company and say, ‘We want this in the pallet.’

Tag costs will be pushed down through the supply chain. Hopefully, the costs will be shared, and they won’t all be dumped on just one player in the supply chain because everybody benefits. There will be benefits for the container and pallet companies [that own or reuse them in a closed loop system]. You have better tracking of your assets. You’ll know where assets are being lost. It will give them better visibility over their own supply chain.

Enterprise: Do you think the initial responsibility for putting tags on pallets is going to fall on the product manufacturer and then the packaging supplier will be hit with that responsibility in the future?

Roberti: That’s the way I see it. In order to meet the rapid deadline that Wal-Mart has set, which is putting tags on pallets and cases by January 2005, the only way to meet that is for the product manufacturers to put the tags on themselves. They also have to put barcodes on cases. Wal-Mart is not saying that you have to put a RFID tag and you don’t have to put a barcode on any more. Wal-Mart wants both. If you are putting a barcode on now, you are presumably going to imbed the RFID tag in the barcode and apply it at the same time. Eventually, companies that use barcodes that are printed on their cases may very well say that they want the RFID tag imbedded in the packaging.

Enterprise: Can the RFID tags be re-used?

Roberti: Some tags are going to be reusable. You will probably need to create a specialized tag that can be reused on pallets. You can have it injected molded into a plastic container, or you could have a tag encased in plastic that can be fitted on to a pallet, either glued or screwed onto the packaging. For pallets, you are going to need to protect the tag because forklift tines can easily hit the tag, damage it and destroy it. If you don’t want to be fined for not meeting reliability rates for reading the pallets, you are going to have to protect those tags. That of course, increases the cost of the tag. But you are amortizing that over the life of the asset.

Enterprise: What are the ways that you see these tags being put on pallets and containers? CHEP has used a plastic lead deck board with a tag imbedded in the plastic, but that would be a pretty expensive route for a typical wooden pallet.

Roberti: That’s not going to be the way it will go. CHEP has already moved on. They have done a lot of research and come up with a tag that can be bent around the corner of the center block and nailed in there. Because the tag is bent, you get the ability to read the tag no matter which way the pallet is facing. Companies may come up with a lot of specialized technology. This is one of the areas that is ripe for spending a little intellectual capital and resources to come up with the best solutions. Some of the companies that make plastic reusable containers are doing precisely that.

Enterprise: Let’s say that you do have a tag on typical wooden pallet, would there be a way to verify to make sure that the tag is still OK to reuse?

Roberti: The tags typically store a serial number…You will be able to record over time which manufacturers are damaging pallets more than others. It’s just simply scanning the tag. If you get nothing back, you know it doesn’t work any more. You may have an electric eye so that as a pallet approaches on a conveyor belt it trips the electric eye which turns on the reader and the reader reads the tag.

Enterprise: What types of new business opportunities do you believe are out there for a company involved in manufacturing or recycling packaging due to the emergence of RFID?

Roberti: RFID represents a major new opportunity to add value to just about anything. Pallets right now are dumb. There is no intelligence connected to them whatsoever. By putting microchips on them that can be connected to computers you can now make pallets or containers smart. You could add sensors. Depending on what goods you are shipping, you might combine the shock sensor with an RFID tag so that if the load is dropped, the RFID tag would record that. And when it is read, it would tell the computer system that there is a problem because this container was dropped. That is a value-added service that some customer may want because they are shipping goods that are very sensitive to shock. They want to ensure that products get to customers without any damage. There are plenty of opportunities here. I would compare it to the Internet. When the Internet came along, a lot of people found ways to use it to create new businesses or to enhance existing ones. RFID is no different.

Enterprise: What do you believe is going to become the defacto frequency standard?

Roberti: The standards issue is still up in the air. That is not totally a surprise. Most new technologies are not born with a single format. Remember Beta and VHS, Macs and PCs. Eventually, the market decides which standard it wants to embrace. It appears that there is significant pressure from end users, standards bodies, and technology venders to create some kind of merged EPC/ISO standard so that everything operates with everything else. There are some big challenges to doing that. You don’t want to add complexity to the systems so that you have to make a bigger microchip which is more expensive, which means that instead of putting a five cent tag on a pallet, the cheapest you can get down to is 10-15 cents. The industry is working through that. They are working together through EPCglobal, the successor to the Auto-ID center. And eventually, the industry will come up with a single, global standard. It’s just going to take a little time.

Enterprise: When you say a little time, can you give a more exact timeframe?

Roberti: The goal of EPCglobal is to have version 2 of the EPC protocol done and have product on the market by the end of 2005. Wal-Mart has said that it is going to use the existing class 1 and class 0 tags, but it wants to commit to the next version. That is not just an upgrade to class 1, it is an entirely new protocol that combines the existing class 1, class 0 and possibly ISO. My guess is that this goal is a little ambitious. But the timetable is eighteen months to two years.

The whole point is to make the next version of the protocol backwards compatible with the tags that are out there now…A lot of people are looking at readers that can be upgraded remotely. You basically download new software via the Internet to the reader and it is able to read the new protocol.

Enterprise: What are the leading technology vendors right now for pallet-level tracking?

Roberti: Alien Technology makes the only class 1 tag available right now. Matrics makes the only class 0 tag. These two companies are focused on the low-cost tagging of pallets and cases. Other companies are moving toward having class 1, version 2 tags including Philips Semiconductors, Texas Instruments and other companies. Some vendors have specialized niches. Escort Memory Systems uses 13.56mhz tags, which have a shorter read range but uses them extensively in industrial manufacturing applications.

Enterprise: It sounds like these tags that wrap around the center board or block are probably going to be the primary methods for attaching to a pallet…right?

Roberti: Well, that’s CHEP’s solution. I don’t know what other people are going to do. They may come up with other solutions. But CHEP has spent a lot of time and money on the issue, and that is what they have come up with. The tag is imbedded in plastic and fastened with nails or staples.

Enterprise: What type of information is primarily going to be tracked using RFID for case-level shipments?

Roberti: They will track the location of the goods so that they know where they are…Some product will have motion sensors. For example, if you are in the military and you have a box with a stinger missile in it and you want to make sure that it is not moved without authorization, you might have a RFID tag with a motion sensor. If it moves, it sets off an alarm. The average corrugated box will have a very simple, low cost tag that carries nothing more than a serial number.

Enterprise: A few years ago Wal-Mart came out with a big push for returnable plastic containers for produce; it was thought that a lot of other retailers would follow their lead. But the industry didn’t move in that direction as much as was predicted. Do you believe the same thing could happen with RFID? Why or why not?

Roberti: I cannot image that happening for a couple of reasons. One is that Wal-Mart has the most efficient supply chain in the retail industry. If Wal-Mart believes it can become even more efficient using RFID, that means that the other retailers will get an even bigger benefit. If P&G is putting RFID tags on goods for Wal-Mart, then it is very easy for Target to say, ‘Please do it for us as well.’ The economies of scale – I mean for P&G if they’re doing it for one. It’s best that they do it for everyone. They would rather not manage two sets of inventories. Efficiencies will lead to mass adoption. As Wal-Mart adopts this, the price tag comes down for everyone else. If Wal-Mart buys 10,000 readers, the reader manufacturers can take that money, invest it and use it to lower their costs. That makes it cheaper for Target, Kroger or whoever to deploy.

Enterprise: Will RFID make reusable packaging more attractive to the user community?

Roberti: In cases where people are using disposable packaging, they are going to look at it and say if I have to put an RFID tag on a package of bananas that is going to be disposed of, it is going to cost me a lot for those tags. Why don’t I put it in reusable containers and then I don’t throw away the packaging, I recycle it and use it again and again and again. The tag doesn’t cost me as much over time.

Enterprise: One criticism that I heard about barcodes is that companies are swimming in data and don’t know how to use it. Will this happen with RFID too? Will there be a lot of companies just slapping tags on so that they can ship them on without worrying about capturing valuable information for themselves?

Roberti: It depends on the company. I don’t think it depends on size. There will be big companies like P&G who understand that this is a huge opportunity and they are going to take advantage of it. There will be huge companies that don’t see it as an opportunity… and the same will be true of mid-level and small companies as well. The opportunity here for manufacturers is very, very large. And there are a number of things that make this different from barcodes. If the manufacturer puts a barcode on something, it doesn’t help them do a recall. They do have lot numbers. But going back and scanning all the barcodes and finding those lot numbers is very difficult. With RFID, you have a specific serial number. Let’s say that you are an auto manufacturer and you need to recall cars. Today, you might recall a million cars to make sure that you got all the ones that potentially had a thousand parts that were bad. In the future, you would be able to find the 1,000 cars and only recall those. And if you save $10-20 million because you don’t recall a million cars, that’s a big thing.

Enterprise: What are the different types of readers that are out there for tracking pallets?

Roberti: The technology will mature. You’re talking about UHF if you’re tracking pallets. 13.56mhz for the most part will not give you the read range that most people want. It is possible to create a portal where you can read a 13.56mhz tag on a pallet, but generally speaking you are going to be going with UHF, which gives you a longer read range. There will be readers on dock doors. Eventually, there will be more readers on forklifts. Conveyors will have RFID readers. You may have readers in the ceiling of your facility. There as many solutions as there are different types of environments. RFID is very environmentally sensitive. It is different from barcodes. With barcodes you get the laser at close range, in line of sight; you hit the barcode and read it. RFID is not close range. It is not line of sight. And so if your dock doors are slightly different from mine, you are going to need a slightly different solution.

Enterprise: Are there any technologies out there that you think are going to revolutionize the industry?

Roberti: RFID is not going to be a technology where you see a huge leap in performance. I think you are going to see small, incremental improvements -- improvements in antennae and chip design. One of the things that is important is how to get power to the tag. Most of the tags are passive; they don’t have batteries. It is very important to get enough energy to the tag to power it up so that it can reflect back a signal. The power consumed by a chip as it is doing calculations, running through its routines and reflecting back its signal, those things involve small improvements in silicon design, so you aren’t going to see a huge leap in technology. You will see improvements but not a massive change because we know silicon technology. People have been doing this for 50 years…Down the road, we will see printed circuitry where you might just print the RFID tag on the box with the antennae. There is some work going on with polymers and non-silicon based chips that could bring the price for a tag down to a penny. I think we will see those breakthroughs within the next ten years. But right now it is a question of building out these systems and maturing the technology and getting everything to work so that you can read everything when you are going to read it.

Enterprise: What is the consensus target goal as far as read accuracy is concerned?

Roberti: It depends. Wal-Mart has said that the pallet needs to be read 100% of the time when it goes through the dock door. The cases on the pallet do not have to be read 100% of the time. The reason for that is that you can’t read a tag on a case of cans of soup in the middle of a pallet full of cans of soup. You can’t penetrate the metal and get power to the soup case and reflect it back. It’s just not possible. Wal-Mart wants to know what is on the pallet because its suppliers send an advance ship notice that says pallet 12345 is coming and it has 50 cases of Gillette razors on it. Wal-Mart has said that once they break down the pallet and hand scan items, they should be read 100% of the time regardless of their orientation. That means if I point at a case and the tag is on the other side, I have to be able to read through the case…Most people would probably put readers around areas where you are repacking, and those tags will be scanned as loads are assembled.

Enterprise: What are the retailers asking for as far as read range?

Roberti: They haven’t said. It is going to depend on a lot of different things.

Enterprise: The frequency should be what?

Roberti: Ultra high frequency, which in the United States is 915mhz. You can use RFID around the world in the UHF spectrum, but the bands are not harmonized to the point where the same tag will be optimized for use everywhere. So what people are doing is that they are making some compromises. It won’t work optimally anywhere but it will work everywhere.

Enterprise: What are the growing pains or real hurdles for widespread adoption of RFID?

Roberti: The biggest hurdles are going to be the problems of the capital investment that are needed. For example, manufacturers and retailers are going to have to make significant capital investments in readers. That is a big issue that will slow adoption. The even bigger question for the long term use is the investment that printing companies and packaging companies will have to make in order to imbed RFID tags in packaging.

Enterprise: One of the problems in the interim is not having enough knowledgeable people to know how to install all these systems…right?

Roberti: Right now there is a small group of people who know how to do this. Just for Wal-Mart’s top 100 suppliers, there are not a lot of people out there who can help those companies get up to speed, put readers on dock doors or install and tune them so that they can read accurately.

Pest Outbreaks Create A Global Packaging Problem

Next time you ship product internationally, you may be exporting more than you think. Hidden packaging passengers, pests such as the pinewood nematode or the Asian long-horned beetle, may travel from one country to another. Recent outbreaks of pests have been traced back to transport packaging, which has led governments around the world to start cracking down on solid wood packaging materials including, pallets, dunnage and crates.

In an effort to stop the global spread of insects, the United Nations has taken the lead in developing a standard for non-manufactured wood packaging materials. This standard likely will impact companies shipping loads abroad by increasing prices and adding to the paperwork needed for export.

Outbreak History
The insect infestation issue has been brewing for several years. The primary culprits are the pinewood nematode and the Asian long-horned beetle. In recent years, Portugal, France, Finland and Sweden have all experienced pinewood nematode outbreaks, which were tied to solid wood packaging. Shipments infected with pinewood nematodes have been traced back to North America, Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan.

The United States has experienced its own problems with the introduction of foreign pests. Outbreaks of the Asian long-horned beetle led to the destruction of scores of hardwood trees in New York and Chicago neighborhoods. The outbreaks prompted the U.S. government to establish regulations concerning shipments from Asia. Shortly thereafter, China responded with restrictions on imports from the U.S. and other countries, citing the need to stop the spread of the pinewood nematode. A barrage of other countries has established restrictions to stop one pest or another. All of this has led to the effort currently under way by the United Nations.

U.N. Standard
The International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), a treaty among 115 countries and administered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, has approved a standard that requires all solid wood packaging materials (both coniferous and non-coniferous) be treated and marked. Approved phytosanitary measures include heat treatment and methyl bromide fumigation. The international standard sets specific treatment requirements. For example, heat treated lumber/packaging must be heated at the core to 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. Adoption of the standard has been left up to each country. Some countries may act quickly. Other countries may never implement the standard. The IPPC global standard only impacts packaging using non-manufactured wood. Engineered wood products such as corrugated, plywood, OSB, etc. are exempt.

According to the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA), approximately 4.5 billion board feet of non-coniferous (hardwood) lumber is used annually for containers and pallets, which is almost 40% of all non-coniferous produced in the U.S. About 72% of all pallets are manufactured using non-coniferous lumber, most of which is low-grade material. Only a small percentage of lumber going into hardwood pallets is dried/heat treated.

The treatment requirement creates an opportunity for coniferous lumber to grab more of the pallet market because a significant amount of coniferous pallet lumber is already kiln dried and therefore meets the heat treatment standard. But it is still too early to tell how drastic any market changes will be.

Europe’s Emergency Measures
In addition to the IPPC standard, the European Union (EU) has imposed emergency measures on coniferous-based solid wood packaging material in order to stop the spread of the pinewood nematode. The emergency measures in Europe only cover coniferous wood packaging from the United States, Canada, China and Japan. Engineered wood products such as oriented strand board, plywood, etc. are exempt.

Outbreaks have become a problem in Portugal, France, Finland and Sweden, forcing other countries in the Common Market to react. On Oct. 1, 2001, the EU started to require packaging material be treated and marked. Although implemented last year, strict enforcement did not start to take place until 2002. Enforcement levels still vary from country to country. Heat treating the core to 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes is the preferred method.

Shipments that do not comply may be refused at the border. More than likely, loads would be transferred to an approved shipping platform, and the non-compliant packaging would be destroyed, all at the shipper’s expense.

According to John Mead, a European pallet industry consultant, requirements limiting the presence of bark, the size of bore holes and the moisture content of solid wood packaging have been in place across the globe for many years. Many of these restrictions have not been enforced. But the pinewood nematode outbreaks have raised concern, mobilizing the entire region to act. Restrictions may vary from country to country. For example, Germany has had laws restricting the entry of chemically treated pallets for some years.

Pallets must be marked to indicate proper treatment. Both new and repaired pallets are covered by the emergency measures.

Implementation of an International Standard
Lumber manufacturers and pallet suppliers are trying to gear up for any changes. However, it will take the market time to add treatment capacity and react. "We have been dealing with the Chinese restrictions for more than a year, and there are still people who are doing it wrong. Implementation will take some time," said Monte Lowe of the NWPCA.

Global standardization will eliminate headaches for shippers. Bob Sanders, a senior engineer in IBM’s corporate packaging department, said "Regulations are not consistent around the world. We are having to manage pallets by destination, which is a problem." Global companies, like IBM, are having to weight the cost of using various pallet specifications on a country by country basis versus setting one standard and sticking to it. The pest protection standards create an opportunity for companies to evaluate packaging on a global scale. But Sanders cautioned that even with the global standard, bi-lateral agreements may create many loopholes that will force shippers to manage on a country by country basis despite the intentions of the IPPC.

Wood Packaging Regulations

As of July 2006, The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service will fully enforce its strict wood product materials shipping regulations in order to reduce the risk of quarantine pests. This regulation applies to all wood packaging material (i.e., wooden pallets, boxes, and crates), which means:

Non complaint regulated wood packaging material will not be allowed to enter the United States as well as many countries internationally.
While phase one of this regulation began in September 2005, as of July 2006, all wooden pallets are required to be heat-treated or fumigated.

This standard will likely impact companies shipping loads abroad by increasing prices and adding to the paperwork needed for export.With this deadline rapidly approaching, more and more exporters and importers are turning to steel for their shipping solutions because it:

Does not require regulatory paperwork including non-coniferous declarations and FDA regulations
